From August 1, 2011, the cost of purchasing a property will be much higher with the State Government’s increases in Stamp Duty. The increases are substantial with $8750 stamp duty payable on a $500,000 home for a principal place of residence. After 1 August, stamp duty on the same property will be $15,525. The purchaser will have to find an additional $6675 if the contract of sale is signed after 1 August 2011.
First home purchasers will not pay additional stamp duty. For homes purchased up to $500,000, first home buyers will remain exempt from paying stamp duty.
Discounts on stamp duty will be given to those people purchasing a newly-built home or building the home themselves.
