Indooroopilly comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘running water’ or ‘gully of leaches. Pronounced ‘Indroo-pilly’, it was first settled by dairy farmers in the 1860s. Then with the railway in 1875 inevitably came more settlers and the first wave of housing development. Now an established suburb leafy suburb, Indooroopilly is populated largely by professionals and university students attending the University of Queensland in neighbouring St Lucia.
Seven kilometers from the CBD, Indooroopilly lies between Taringa on the city side and Chapel Hill on the west. The Brisbane River forms the southern boundary and Mt Cootha the north-western boundary.
Indooroopilly is a major commercial, office and retail centre. Indooroopilly Shopping Centre which was built in the 1970s is the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s west.
As with most Brisbane suburbs that have developed over the past 150 years, Indooroopilly has a range of dwelling styles. Iconic Queenslander homesteads with sweeping verandas populate various pockets of the suburb. Multi-story units, townhouses, free-standing dwellings and modern, architecturally designed homes also criss-cross the suburb. A trend to townhouse and unit development in the suburb in recent years is most evident around the Indooroopilly Rail Station which provides commuters with fast access to Brisbane’s CBD.
The median price of houses in the suburb in June 2009 was $617,500. The median price of units and townhouses was $385,000 (information from REIQ cited on our Brisbane website).

Indooroopilly has excellent transport services including a bus interchange at Indooroopilly Shoppingtown and the Indooroopilly rail station which is on the Ipswich Rail line.
Moggill Road is the main arterial road that links to Coronation Drive and the city to the east and Kenmore, Brookfield and Moggill to the west. The Western Freeway is another major arterial road to the suburb.
Bike ways are a feature of the Brisbane landscape providing residents with an environmentally friendly way to move around. The bike way on the Western Freeway can be accessed from Taringa Parade at Indooroopilly. It joins up with the Coronation Drive cycle path to the city and to the University of Queensland bikeway.
Now considered a thriving urban hub, Indooroopilly has an abundance of restaurants, cafes and shopping areas. Boutique strip shopping on either side of the railway station provides a different shopping experience to Indooroopilly Shoppingtown.
The Eldorado cinema has long been an Indooroopilly icon and there is also a cinema complex in the Indooroopilly Shoppingtown.
Golfing enthusiasts gravitate to the Indooroopilly Golf Course (private course) at Long Pocket and the St Lucia Golf Course (public).
Up until the 1960s, a sandy beach under the Walter Taylor Bridge at Indooroopilly was popular for picnicking and swimming.
